AMMA WINTERSCHOOL

The AMMA Winterschool takes place annually in January. The short courses which are organised in this School are designed to offer students both overview and insight into the state of the art of medical anthropological research in five essential themes in health care.
The executive courses are organised for health and health-related professionals and/or social scientists and taught in English. The (inter)national participants will be exposed to the latest thinking in medical anthropology and will be enabled to discuss and exchange ideas. Groups are small. Teaching style is interactive.

PROGRAMME

The different two week courses are offered in parallel sessions by experts in their fields. The courses are open to all. The following courses will be offered in 2012:

  • Culture, Psychology and Psychiatry (9-20 January 2012)
  • Anthropology of Sexuality, AIDS and Reproductive Health (23 January - 3 February 2012)
  • Medicine and Human Rights In Cross-cultural Perspective (6 - 17 February 2012)

MODE OF TEACHING & STUDY MATERIALS

The course is conducted in English and consists of interactive lectures, discussions and individual or group assignments. Study materials comprise lectures and illustrations, discussions, visualizations (video), reader (syllabus), list of key books and articles, electronic learning (Blackboard) including discussion board, links and websites and individual assignments, such as interview or essay assignments.

ACCREDITATION

The short courses are part of the accredited master's curriculum, guaranteeing that the highest academic and practical professional standards are maintained.
The executive courses of Culture, Psychology and Psychiatry, Children Health and Well-being and Medicine and Human Rights will also be accredited by Dutch professional accreditation.

CERTIFICATE

Credits for the course are assessed on the basis of attendance and participation. All participants completing the course receive a certificate of attendance.

APPLICATION

Applicants are expected to have a Master's degree in any of the social sciences or in the field of medicine, public health or a paramedical science, or a Bachelor's degree with at least two years of relevant working experience in these fields. The admission committee will evaluate professional qualifications other than these before admission is granted.

Students that want to apply for a scholarship have to apply for the executive courses before May 1. Usually they need an admission letter before they can apply for a scholarship. Students that have private funding, or that are sponsored by their employer have an application deadline of October 1.
Students selected for admission will be asked to transfer the tuition fee in time, as confirmation is final only after its receipt. Enrolment is limited to 25 participants. Students will be accepted into the programme in the order in which payment is received. If there is insufficient registration for the course, the AMMA reserves the right to cancel and refund the tuition fees.

TUITION FEE

The tuition fee for one executive course is € 1475 including reading and e-learning material. The tuition fee for a track of two executive courses is € 2500.
Lodging and lunches are not included. Non-residents looking for information on travel, visa requirements or a temporary address during the course can contact the AMMA office for suggestions.

CANCELLATION

Registration can be cancelled until 1 November. The complete tuition fee (except for € 100 administration costs) will then be refunded. After 1 November no refunds will be made.
